Action Step: Ankle, Knee, Hip Strength

Start Aging Intelligently today. The process: one step at a time. The road: move everything in your body every day.

Those little pathetic, underused ankles at the bottom of your stick legs support a lot of weight. Well, ok, all of it. How about being kind to them by strengthening and aligning the ankles and saving your knees and hips?

Just before you eat, and from a standing position, roll your ankles towards the outside of your feet. That would be, pinky side. It lifts the arch, and engages the muscles (adductors) along the inside of the leg. When the inside of the leg is engaged, it subtly opens the hip joint, supports the ligaments and tendons along the knee, and keeps the ankle in line with both the knee and hip. It’s dynamic alignment from your hips to the floor. Let your ankle relax and roll back toward big toe side, and then roll back to pinky side. Do it 10 times, holding each pinky side position for 2 seconds, totaling 20 whole seconds. Really? Posture change in 20 seconds. Yes indeed. The process is one step at a time, long term.

Only then, eat.

This adds a habit you already do (eating) to a habit that you want to form (ankle, knee, hip strength ).

Aging Intelligently is a process and a practice.

Great tip! I’m a big fan of linking current activities with new activities . . . and this example is an easy to implement solution to increasing ankle strength! Thanks – I know I can “fit this into my schedule”.

  2. What a great idea to move, Dempsey! Have not thought of that at all.

And I love how you sync it up with the act if eating, it already creates a habit and encourages practicing it at least 3 times a day (not to count the snacks, haha!)

If we look at our life as holistic, everything is connected to everything else. And if we make it easy enough to do, the chances are, we will comply. That’s aging, in a very smart way. I’m glad that I have made it easy to implement. Thanks.

This is nice! I had been having problems with my joints lately. I could give it a try 🙂

  5. Honestly I haven’t thought that in a few seconds we can do so much for our body! thanks!!

Great tip and LOVE that you incorporate the exercise with something we are already in the habit of doing. Genius!
